Unexpected, ehm, what?
Some days I am entertained by PHP's very "descriptive" error messages. Check this one:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM in /home/charlvn/webdev/kontak.php on line 84
Is that Japanese? No, it's Hebrew. :) It turns out I had $beheer::kryAdminAdres() instead of either $beheer->kryAdminAdres() or Beheer::kryAdminAdres(). Bah.
Update: This is bigger than I thought. The error has its own wikipedia page.
Blog Redesign & Remarkup
I have been quite silent for the last while mainly because I have been really, really busy with various projects (mostly commercial, but also some open source).
If you're visited this blog in the last week or two, you might have noticed that a redesign is taking place. This will be gradual (as usual) but I have some big plans for this blog still.
So far I have a new logo up and also syndicated my del.icio.us account's bookmarks in the sidebar. Due to the lack of server-side scripting on blogspot, it is unfortunately loaded client-side using JavaScript though.
I also want to investigate the possibilities of syndicating my newsvine column.
In terms of a remarkup, I now no longer use inline stylesheets. I also plan on making the markup a little cleaner and getting the document structure sorted out (for accessibility).
There is still much left to be done, but we will get there eventually (between the tons of other work I have to do). ;)
mod_delicious
I have a new mini-project called mod_delicious. It's basically a simple Joomla module that displays your latest bookmarks from del.icio.us.
The first version will have to live within the confinements of the del.icio.us HTML feeds, but I plan on using the del.icio.us API later to give me more flexibility (and more semantic markup). Caching is higher on the list, though.
I have some stuff checked into the subversion repository; feel free to browse the trunk for code so long if you like. Just remember that the stuff in the trunk is in development, so expect bugs. ;)
I will make another announcement on this blog as soon as it reaches beta. This should be soon.
Feedback and ideas at this point in time will already be much appreciated.
Joomla 1.5
Although the current stable of Mambo looks a little newer than the current stable of Joomla, the (currently Alpha) Joomla 1.5 is miles ahead of Mambo 4.6 RC2.
Joomla 1.5 offers very significant interface enhancements, especially in the administration panel. The new interface is a lot simpler and seemingly quicker to load.
But the major enhancements you'll find in the framework architecture. I have for long complained a lot about the Mambo / Joomla API (or lack thereof), but that seems to be improving quickly now.
I think that Joomla still has a very far way to go (especially if I look at the validation of the front page of a default installation - but this is still Alpha, remember). Nevertheless I am very excited about the improvements being made at the moment.
Flood in George
In South Africa we are experiencing very weird weather. George is flooding, for example.
Naturally I have both links and photos up.
Windows Live Ideas
I have been trying some of the things on Windows Live yesterday.
Windows Live Custom Domains is Microsoft's new equivalent to Google Hosted. However, they give you an unlimited amount of standard Hotmail mailboxes (25 MB each) unlike the 25 mailbox limit at Google.
They also give you 40 invites for Windows Live Mail Beta which has 2 GB space. They even allow you to make it so that anybody can sign up for an account at your domain themselves.
On the downside, they only allow you to use a second level domain like example.com. Thus a third-level domain such as charlvn.za.net wouldn't qualify.
Windows Live Mail might offer many advantages of traditional Hotmail, but the large ugly banner ads are still there. :(
Every time I try to sign up for Windows Live Mail Desktop Beta I get an error.
Office Live seems to be only for Americans. You can't fill in your street address if it's outside America.
Windows Live Messenger
Today I tried the release of Windows Live Messenger. Much better! The install seemed to have gone a lot faster (unless it's just my imagination playing tricks because I didn't do actual timing). I got one error during the install about some key it couldn't set up in my registry, although I'm logged in as an Administrator. I just clicked "Ignore" and it didn't seem to have caused any serious problems.
I logged on, and all my contacts were there! Yay!
It's very pretty. I love the user interface so far. I think the feature hiding the menu bar is a little weird though. But otherwise it rocks.
Apparently it's now got integration with Yahoo and I don't know what else; like I could care anyway. :)
And for those that want to see before they download, there's always screenshots on Flickr by me and others. :)
